PIQUA – A new and one-of-a-kind business recently opened up in the city of Piqua, capitalizing on a new trend and healthier alternative to smoking cigarettes.

Donna Atkinson opened City Vapor & E-Cig, 1227 E. Ash St., earlier this month, which sells e-cigs and tobacco alternative products.

Atkinson’s Piqua location is the first City Vapor business in the state of Ohio. The franchise business has locations throughout the country, with dozens of stores in Florida and several in Tennessee, among others.

Atkinson is a former smoker and breast cancer survivor who has family members and friends who have or had cancer from smoking. She said she knows even more people who are longtime smokers who have a hard time quitting the habit.

She said she decided to start the business after trying the product and finally kicking her cigarette habit.

“My friends quit smoking and were using a City Vapor down in Tennessee,” she said. “It really has helped a lot of people to quit smoking.”

City Vapor is a veteran-owned company that started as a way of giving soldiers a healthier alternative to smoking cigarettes.

A business major and business and technology teacher at Xenia High School, Atkinson said she has always wanted to start her own business and branch out on a second career.

Atkinson also is working on opening a sister City Vapor shop in Troy, which is tentatively scheduled to open July 28. The store’s location will be at 1291 S. Dorset Road, Troy.

With the rise in popularity of e-cigarettes or tobacco alternatives, Atkinson said it was an easy choice to make to start up the business.

“It is hard for a lot of people to quit smoking,” she said. “This is a healthy alternative, plus they will save a lot of money.”

In addition to e-cigarettes and non-tobacco-related products, the business also offers a wide selection of various flavors, kits, batteries, coils, cartomizers, clearomizers, and other related items.
