PIQUA — Over the last few weeks the city’s Public Works department has been sending out a number of photos via social media to highlight area parks. First was Pitsenbarger Park to emphasize its many amenities from the city pool to soccer and baseball fields, to the community garden plots and the skateboard park, among many others. This highlight was only the first of many to come as part of a nation-wide celebration of July as parks and recreation month.

“(It’s to) encourage people to just get out, to come out to a park instead of working inside, bring your work out with you,” said Brian Brookhart, assistant public works director, of the goal behind the near 30 year annual parks and recreation observance. “It’s just to get the word out and encourage people to use their park system.”

The current park of the week is Fountain Park as the location of the city’s annual Fourth of July celebration hosted by the Piqua Fourth of July Association. Park staff and volunteers had trimmed low-hanging tree limbs for the non-profit vendors that will be on location starting at 10 a.m. today. Sprucing up Hance Pavilion, turning over mulch around play equipment, and over-all working (And enjoying) the first break from the humidity on a beautiful Wednesday afternoon.

“When you think about it, we’re stuck in our offices all day,” said Brookhart. “Just take an hour, a lunch hour, to come out and enjoy the quiet.”

Last week, Lock Nine Riverfront Park (125 E. Water St.) was highlighted for its great view of the multi-purpose recreational path, the Great Miami River, and downtown area. It was also highlighted as the location for the Rock Piqua! Riverfront concert series.

Next week, the 35-acre Hollow Park on Scot Drive with its picnic shelters, playground equipment, and trail access will be highlighted. And before July is over Lock Nine Park will be re-highlighted once more before the last in the three-part concert series that will feature Nashville Crush with Me vs Gravity.
