COLUMBUS — This time, Julie Accurso won the bragging rights.

In a race that featured three of the top distance runners in area history, Accurso — a Miami East graduate now competing for Ohio University — edged out Russia graduate Katie Borchers and Versailles graduate Tammy Berger, both of whom compete for The Ohio State University, in the 1,500-meter run at the Jesse Owens Track Classic at The Ohio State University last weekend.

Accurso — who had missed the opening of the outdoor season with an injury — grabbed bragging rights amongst the three, placing fifth overall in a time of 4:26.66. She is a senior at Ohio University. Borchers, a junior at Ohio State, followed behind in sixth place (4:28.06). Berger, a sophomore at Ohio State, finished 12th overall (4:31.20).

It’s not the first time the three have raced against one another in a high-stakes meet.

In 2009, the three competed against one another at the Ohio High School Athletic Association Division III state cross country championships. At that meet, Berger won the state championship as a sophomore (18:47.94), while Borchers, then a junior at Russia, took third (19:10.05) and Accurso took seventh (19:28.13).

All three runners captured at least one state championship during their high school careers. As a senior, Accurso won the 1,600 at the 2010 OHSAA state track and field championships. Borchers was a state champion in the 800 at the 2011 state track and field meet. Berger was a two-time state champion in the 3,200, a member of two state championship relay teams and won two state cross country titles.

All three have won numerous awards in college, as well. Accurso is the most decorated distance runner in Mid-American Conference history, having won numerous MAC cross country and track and field titles. She’s earned All-American honors in both sports. Both Borchers and Berger have captured All-Big Ten and All-America honors in track and cross country.
