BRADFORD — If you see Michayla Barga coming down the hall, don’t challenge her to knock the battery off your shoulder — because she will.

It’s that kind of drive and determination that makes Barga so successful on the basketball floor — and she will continue that at the college level after signing her letter of intent to play for Cincinnati State Thursday in the Bradford High School lunchroom.

And while Barga’s confidence on the floor helped take the Bradford girls basketball team to heights never seen before — a berth in the district finals and the first 20-wins season in school history — it is all still a blur for the daughter of Sandra Miller.

“It is really overwhelming. It is hard to put into words,” Barga said. “Everything that has happened this year. I think that is the reason I am going to be playing next year. This is exciting.”

The versatile guard who averaged 5.9 points, 3.5 rebounds and 2.6 assists had her mind made up by a recent trip to the Lady Surge’s campus.

“I wasn’t really sure until I went to an open gym last week,” Barga said. “We had talked back and forth all year, but I went down there for a visit last week. I loved the campus — it was big.

I loved all my teammates. We just hit it off. I spent most of the day down there with them. And they play a very similar style to what we played at Bradford.”

Bradford coach Patrick McKee said Barga made a great choice.

“Cincinnati State is a great fit for her,” McKee said. “They play a very similar style to our style. She will do really well there.”

And McKee can’t think of anyone more deserving.

“You always want to see your players be able to go on,” he said. “She gets to do it (sign) in front of the whole student body. It is a great day for her.

Michayla is the kind of player that if you asked her to run through a wall, she would find a way to do it. Her hustle is why she is where she is.”

And why she will continue to be up to any challenge.
