PIQUA — Charges of rape and abduction were dismissed Wednesday against a Piqua man who was charged last week after a woman came forward recently and alleged she was sexually assaulted at Fountain Park by the man in 2011.
Douglas M. Wintrow, 21, was arraigned in municipal court last week on a charge of rape and abduction, but at the man’s preliminary hearing on Wednesday those two felonies were dismissed without prejudice.
It was unknown if the case would be going before a Miami County grand jury since those proceedings are held in secret. However, it is not uncommon for a criminal suspect to have charges dismissed without prejudice before being considered by a grand jury.
Authorities in Piqua initially charged Wintrow after a victim who was acquainted with the suspect came forward recently and claimed she was sexually assaulted by Wintrow at Fountain Park in May 2011 when she was 17.
Police said the victim, who reported the alleged rape in October, came forward after she received counseling and family support.
